JESUS–GOD’S ROCK OF AGES
The Word of God states that as believers in Christ Jesus, you are “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (Ephesian 2:19-20). And the biblical Word says all scripture is inspired by God so that the servant of God may be thoroughly furnished and be rightly guided (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12).
The Old Testament testifies that the people of God “drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4). The New Testament testifies that Christ Jesus is “the cornerstone” of God’s church.
THE NEW TESTAMENT REVEALS JESUS AS THE SON–THE ROCK OF GOD
God the Father revealed to Peter that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God…and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:16-19).
Evident Satan was able to prevail over Peter; but not over Jesus: “Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man” (Matthews 16:21-23).
By Jesus’ death and resurrection as the atonement for sin, he canceled believers’ debt of sin; and prevailed over Satan and the powers of evil (Colossians 2:14-15; Ephesians 6:12).
THE APOSTLES OF JESUS WITNESSED HE IS GOD’S SON–THE ROCK OF AGES.
THE APOSTLE PETER. Being empower by the Holy Spirit whom he received from Christ, Peter told many unbelievers: “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” (Acts 2:36). And, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
THE APOSTLE PAUL. Having seen and recognized Jesus as “Lord,” Paul preached and proclaimed him as Savior of the world (Acts 9:1-20).
THE APOSTLE JOHN recorded what Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life….” John 3:16-18).
