RESURRECTION DAY
Jesus said: “For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:20).
JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED AND RESURRECTED AS HE SAID. After Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to his disciples and spoke to them: “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things” (Luke 24:42-48).
Bible writers of the New Testament witnessed that Jesus was crucified and resurrected after three days; and that he did this so that people who believe would be saved from sin and live eternally with God. For without the shedding of Jesus’s blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22; Romans 3:23).
WE ARE RESURRECTED WITH THE SPIRIT OF JESUS. The biblical Word of God tells us who believe in Jesus’ atonement for sin that we “do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:4). We may confidently say: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ [by his Spirit] lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20).
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his” (Romans 4:3-5).
WE WILL BE RESURRECTED WITH THE BODY OF CHRIST. The Word of God assures us we will be resurrected with a body like the glorious body of Jesus Christ: “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). And “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you” (Romans 8:11).
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
