BEING GOD’S WILLING SERVANT
The Bible says: “No one can serve two masters” (Matthews 6:24). “You are slaves of the one you obey—whether to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness” (Romans 6:16; 6:23).
CHOOSING TO A SLAVES OF THE DEVIL
Adam and Eve, the fore-parents of mankind, became slaves of Satan when they obeyed the devil in the Garden of Eden. The devil used a serpent to deceive them into disobeying God’s command not to eat of a particular tree lest they should die (Genesis 3; Revelation 20:2). When they sinned by disobeying God, they were separated from him, and they became spiritually dead in relationship to God (Ephesians 2:5; 1 Timothy 5:6). Furthermore, physically, “people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
WILLING TO BE A SERVANT OF GOD
Some people may be willing to serve God, but feel inadequate, because of the sinful nature inherited from Adam and Eve; “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But the Bible encourages and gives hope to those who are willing, to believe, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
BEING A SERVANT OF GOD
God has provided his Son Jesus Christ as the way and example to being a servant of God. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). “And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
Even when Jesus was faced with dying in agony on a cross for the sins of the world, he prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:42-43).
Jesus told believers who are willing to obey him: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you” (John 14:15-17).
The biblical Word of God assures us, when “you become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life” (Romans 6:22).
