OUR NEED TO KNOW GOD’S WORD
The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who overcame the world, said, mankind should live on “every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
KNOW HOW TO BE SAVED FROM SIN
The scriptures of the Bible teach us the things we need to know to have a right understanding of and relationship with God:
- “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
- “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
- “Without the shedding of [Jesus’] blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews (9:22).
- But “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son” (John 3:16-18).
(The first book of the Bible II remember reading, as a child, was the gospel of John. In reading this gospel I began to learn about Jesus, the Son of God, who came into the world to die for my sins (John 3:16). I accepted the Lord when I was about ten years old. After drifting away from the Lord, the Word led me back to him. I had a renewed and deeper interest in and knowing more about him and his Word. I was inspired to spend a significant amount of time praying and fasting and studying the Bible.)
KNOW HOW TO GROW INTO JESUS’ LIKENESS:
DESIRE TO GROW SPIRITUALLY. Desire to be conformed to the likeness of God’s Son Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). “Desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1Peter 2:2).
PRAY ALWAYS. Jesus said, people “should always pray“ (Luke 18:1). Jesus is our example of praying often to our Father (Luke 5:6; Luke 6:12; Mark 1:35; Matthew 26:36…). He taught his disciples to pray to our Father which is in heaven (Luke 11:1-4).
STUDY TO HAVE A RIGHT UNDERSTANDING. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Paul commended the people of the early Berean church because they “examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true” (Acts 17:11). But warned the people of God to turn away from those who do not teach the truth of God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:5).
SUBMIT TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. Jesus said, “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26). We need to know the biblical Word of God for the Spirit to remind us of what Jesus said–and did.
Jesus said “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37-38). – “Love one another. As I have loved you” (John 13:34).
KNOW WHEN TO GET READY TO LIVE WITH GOD IN HEAVEN
- Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. (2 Corinthiansv6:2).
- God has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
- For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
Because of his great love, God lets us know in his inspired Word: Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory”…The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:51-57)
