THE RIGHT WAY TO HAVE CHILDREN?
There is a lot of debate about the right way to have children; and about when life begins. Some people posit “scientific” theories or opinions about these issues. God who created all things provides the Creator’s answers in the Bible (John 1:1-4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
DEBATE ABOUT THE RIGHT WAY
Debate about the right way to have children, including when life begins, apparently stems largely from the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade that says women have the right to have abortions. However, a “pro-life” movement which defends the right of unborn children to live opposes the Court’s decision.
People who believe women have a right to have abortions, counters the “pro-life” movement with their own “pro-choice” movement. People of the latter movement argue that “there was no scientific evidence to prove when human life begins.” But those of the former movement take the position that ”It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception, when egg and sperm join to form the zygote, and that this developing human always is a member of our species in all stages of life.”
A debate on when life begins in pregnancy was conducted at a governmental hearing and reported in The New York Times, April 26, 1981.
However, people of the pro-life movement are apt to support their position with what the Creator says in the Bible
BIBLE POSITION ON THE RIGHT WAY
For those who believe in the Bible as the Word of God, they look to God’s inspired Scriptures for directions concerning life issues rather than solely the opinions of people (Acts 5:29). The biblical Word of God says the following about the sanctity of life and when life begins:
JEREMIAH 1:5. Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. (Jeremiah 1:5).
PSALM 139:13. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13).
JOB 31:15. “Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?”
COLOSSIANS 1:16. The Bible informs us that when the Lord God created you and everyone else in our mother’s womb his purpose was for each of us to glorify him; to conform us to the likeness of God’s Son Jesus Christ, whom God gave to die for us (Romans 8:29; John 3:16).
BENEFITS OF THE BIBLE WAY OF HAVING CHILDREN
The Scriptures provide directions and benefits for those who are concerned about pleasing God and having children the Bible’s way:
- In the Bible, children are said to be “a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3).
- Those who accept Bible principles like the following, put themselves in the best position to receive God’s approved heritage of children:
- People should live by “every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4; Timothy 3:16-17).
- God “honor” sex in marriage and the “fruit” which it produces; but “God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. (Hebrews 13:4; Genesis 1:28).
- Before God forms children in the womb he has a purpose for each of them (Jeremiah 1:5; Colossians 1:16)
- The Bible apostle, Paul, recognized these Bible principles and said, “because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband”(1 Corinthians 7:1 -2).
- A scientific study showed benefits of being aligned with principles of the Bible. A study by Guttmacher Institution showed that married pregnant women were far less apt to abort their babies than unmarried women. In the study of abortions among women ages 15-44 it was found that 86% were unmarried, while only 14% were married.
- However, some unmarried women, like some in my family, have chosen to give birth and keep their children, or give them to relatives or others who want to adopt them, rather than abort them or cast them aside. They apparently have were influenced by the Bible, their God-sensitized conscience or natural desire to have children.
- Some parents have repented and asked God to forgive them for disobeying him and aborting their children. God has forgiven them, because he loves them and gave his Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross for their sins and be their Savior and Lord (1 John 1:9).
The Bible way of having children is evidently the best way for parents and children. The Bible way considers God’s value of and benefits to parents and children. The God of the Bible who loves us enough to have his Son die for us while we were still sinners instruct us (Romans 5:8): “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding: think about him in all you ways, and he will guide you on the right paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
