The Lord is Our Shepherd
The Bible psalmist, David, wrote about what it is like to follow the Lord as his shepherd in the 23rd Psalm. In the Bible, Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).
JESUS IS OUR LORD AND SHEPHERD OF THE 23RD PSALM:
1. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Jesus Christ said he is the Lord and Shepherd of all who hear and obey his words:
- Jesus said those who are my sheep “will keep My commandments” (John 14:15)
- “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46).
- My people shall live “on every word that comes from the mouth of God'” (Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).)
- My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19).
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
The Lord assures his followers: “God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep” ( John 10:11).
Those who repent and believe in God’s Son Jesus Christ, God restores to a right relationship with him (Acts 2:38). And his Holy Spirit works in them to guide and conform them to the likeness of his Son (Romans 8:29).
4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Though we walk through a world of sin and darkness, and our enemy the devil goes about seeking whom he may devour, We should not fear no evil for the you are with me. Your Word and Spirit comfort. Nothing shall by any means harm us. (Luke 10:19).
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25).
Jesus breathed on his disciple and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22).
All who repent and believe in the Lord are anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; 38).
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Our Lord and Shepherd said: “My Father’s house has many rooms…I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:2-3).
